Urgent PowerChute Software Update for your APC 8/03/05 AMS Technical Support has encountered a large volume of calls dealing with servers that are running APC PowerChute Business Edition software prior to version 7. They are reporting severe problems that may affect Windows Services and other normal OS functions. Windows, Backup Exec and SQL have been reported to suddenly stop or fail. This is reported to affect PowerChute software users below version 7.x. The PowerChute software is used to monitor the UPS or backup battery for your server in the event of a power failure. This is not a AMS product, but is from APC. AMS is passing this critical information on to you in the event that it may severely impact your server. Below is a statement from APC’s web site and instructions to update your software. In order for PowerChute Business Edition to remain functional, users must upgrade to any version of 7.x. Due to expiration of the Sun Java Runtime Environment certificate, versions 6.x of PowerChute Business Edition will cease to operate normally as of July 27, 2005. Failure to upgrade will result in PowerChute Business Edition no longer providing monitoring and graceful shutdown of your system. APC recommends that you stop the PBEagent.exe and PBEserver.exe and any other PBE services. You may have to boot into safe mode to disable these services. APC then recommends that you update your software immediately. APC’s Knowledge Base support article is # 7202 or APC’s Support number is 800.800.4272. As a temporary fix prior to upgrading your APC software recommended by agencies running PowerChute: Several customers have reported the following to have resolved the problem.
(This is not APC’s instructions.) If you are running PowerChute
below version 7.x and suddenly find that Windows or a service running on your
server hangs; your agency may have temporary success by opening Task Manager,
going to Processes and verifying any processes that begin with “pbe”,
specifically “pbeserver.exe” and “pbeagent.exe” are
running. If these services are found to be running; you may have success by
ending all of these processes. Once they are stopped, immediately go to Start,
Control Panel and open Add/Remove Programs. Remove all PowerChute Business Edition
programs that are installed. After you have disabled these services; you should
immediately go to APC’s Technical Support web site and follow the instructions
